This exceptional piece was part of a wealthy private collection. The previous owners donated pieces to museums, but kept this in their private collection.
This sculpture is crafted from bronze and adorned with gilt, providing it with a lustrous and regal appearance. The entire piece is meticulously detailed, showcasing the artistic skill and devotion of its creator.
Yamantaka is depicted with nine heads, many adorned with a skull crown, symbolizing his mastery over death and ignorance. The extended tongue, a fierce expression of his wrath, signifies his ability to consume and transform negativity.
With over twenty arms and sixteen legs, Yamantaka embodies strength and agility, wielding an arsenal of ritual implements to subdue evil forces, symbolizing his ability to skillfully overcome obstacles and protect practitioners on their spiritual journey. His embrace of Vajrayogini, the embodiment of his compassion, highlights the inseparable nature of wrath and compassion in the path to enlightenment.
The detachable base of the figurine adds another layer of complexity to the piece. The base features eight smaller figurines, likely representing celestial beings or deities, and includes depictions of animals like a sheep and bird. These figurines and animals are positioned at the feet of Yamantaka, emphasizing his dominion over the entire realm.
This intricate and powerful sculpture serves as a potent reminder of Yamantaka's role as the destroyer of ignorance and protector of the Dharma. His wrathful manifestation is not a sign of malice but a necessary force to eradicate the delusions that hinder spiritual growth.
