Don Polland was an American sculptor known for his outstanding works of Western art. Polland served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was stationed in Italy. After the war, Polland studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the Art Center School in Los Angeles.

Polland's sculptures often depict historical figures and events of the American West, including cowboys, Native Americans, and pioneers. His works are characterized by their attention to detail and accuracy, as well as their dynamic and lifelike poses. He also used a variety of materials in his sculptures, including bronze, wood, and stone.

One of Polland's most notable works is the "Horse Thief" sculpture, which is located in front of the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado. The sculpture depicts a cowboy on horseback chasing a thief who has stolen a horse. The piece captures the action and drama of the Old West, and has become a popular landmark in the area.

Another famous work by Polland is the "Buffalo Hunt" sculpture, which is located in the lobby of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. The sculpture depicts a Native American tribe hunting buffalo on horseback, and is considered one of the most significant works of Western art in the world.

Polland's sculptures can also be found in several other museums and public spaces throughout the United States, including the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles, and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis.

In addition to his sculpture work, Polland was also an accomplished painter, illustrator, and writer. He authored several books, including "Western Bronze: The Fine Art of Don Polland" and "The Little Book of Cowboy Wisdom."

Don Polland passed away in 2010 at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional Western art. His works continue to be highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike, and he is considered one of the most significant Western artists of the 20th century.
